What Is L-Glutamine?
L-Glutamine is the most abundant inessential amino acid in the human body and makes up the majority of the amino acids in skeletal muscle. Despite being involved in many crucial roles in our daily health and function, it’s considered “inessential” because the body is capable of producing it on its own. However, there are situations when l-glutamine can become essential… the most notable of which is when intense activity (like weight training, cardio, etc.) is being performed on a regular basis. And this of course is why it became a popular supplement among people who exercise regularly. Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning the body synthesizes it. After being synthesized by the tissues, glutamine is stored in muscle, lung, liver, brain and stomach tissues. Glutamine makes up sixty percent of the body’s amino acid stores and serves to fuel the intestines and immune system, aid in the regeneration and repair of soft tissues, prevent health problems and maintain the antioxidant supply within the body.
Functions of L-Gutamine:
Glutamine has been shown to have positive effects on immune system function, cell volume, and protein substrate recycling for increased proteine synthesis. These advantages make Glutamine a sensible anabolic supplement which is beneficial & popular with bodybuilders. Supplementation of 5-10g a day is beneficial to restore lost Glutamine in muscle cells. As well as this, it puts pressure on fluid retention in cells so that the cell volume can ultimately increase. The body takes this increase in cell water retention as a signal for cell growth and starts to intensify production of protein and glycogen with the aim of increased performance of muscle cells. At the same time, L-glutamine prevents muscle catabolism and improves your body’s ability to recover during sleep.
Glutamine is normally a non-essential amino acid. In other words, we make enough of it. When does it become conditionally essential? In other words, when might taking a glutamine supplement make sense? The interest in glutamine helping people recover faster is actually based on clinical research. When glutamine is given to people, their immune systems improve, they sometimes gain weight and recover faster after surgery. Because glutamine appears to work on these individuals, those in the supplement business started to market it to people who exercise because exercise is a stress too.
Glutamine for Bodybuilding:
Glutamine is commonly marketed to body builders because it has been shown to enhance muscle recovery, display anti-catabolic behavior, increase protein synthesis, and muscle hydration all important stuff. Glutamine does seem to improve muscular performance. It does so by improving glucose regulation, immune function, protein synthesis and promoting a positive nitrogen balance. Several types of immune cells rely on glutamine for energy, meaning that our immune system would be impaired without this amino acid. Additionally it plays a major role in protein synthesis (muscle development & repair) and digestion. Lastly, it is an important and alternative source of energy for our brain particularly in stressful times.
L-Glutamine Acts as a Building Block For Muscles:
When the body is unable to recover due to repetitive injuries or stress to the muscles, a glutamine diet is recommended. L Glutamine or glutamine is an amino acid that is produced by the body. Like any amino acids, it acts as a building block for muscles in the body. It is one of the few acids that can be directly absorbed by the brain, therefore breaching the blood barrier. It is present in the body as glutamate or glutamic acid. A glutamine diet includes foods high in glutamine and food supplements with added glutamine. Foods rich in glutamine include dairy, meat and eggs along with vegetables like cabbage, beets, celery, kale, Brussels sprouts, spinach and carrots. Even fruits like papaya are high in glutamine. This is also available in capsule or powder form which can be taken to supplement natural foods. Peptide bonds are often used along with amino acids as these supplements are easily absorbed.
L-Glutamine and Weight Loss:
A small preliminary study published in the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in November 2014 found that obese women who took glutamine supplements for four weeks lost weight even without changing their diet and exercise habits. When they took a protein supplement for the same amount of time, they didn't experience any significant weight loss. But larger studies are needed to verify these benefits and determine what, if any, dose of glutamine is most beneficial for weight loss. If we are training at a level where we are shocking our system (which is important when you want to lose weight and/or build muscle) then our glutamine levels will be depleted. This is especially true with bodybuilders and marathon runners who are pushing themselves to the extremes. In these situations, it is important to supplement with Glutamine to maintain immune function and allow our muscles to repair and grow.
L-Glutamine on Brain Performance:
Glutamine is also considered as an innate neurotransmitter. The existence of L-glutamine helos the substances inside the brain pass on information. It can also, in glucose deficiency, give sufficient vigor for brain performance, and assists the brain recollection, attentiveness and capability to concentrate. Being an essential amino acid in the body L-glutamine most definitely has an effect of the brain and how it functions. L-glutamine is an essential neurotransmitter that aids the brain in memory, focus, and concentration functions. This helping then increase these function much like a nootropic.
Glutamine Skin Benefits:
Amino acid skin benefits two important ingredients that are becoming more popular in skincare is Glutamine. Glutamine are amino acids. A healthy balance and supply of nutrients helps to increase the regeneration of cells, this in turn fights the negative effects of aging. Since our diets are usually unbalanced and unhealthy, amino acids help to balance the acid-base levels through neutralization. Our amino acid levels decline as we age and therefore the balancing of these levels by amino’s are not as effective and our skin loses its elasticity, as wrinkles begin to form more often at a faster rate. Additionally our body loses its ability to produce collagen at a sufficient rate. Glutamine: is the most abundant naturally occurring, non-essential amino acid in the human body. Also known as L-glutamine, this amino acid is scientifically proven to play an important role in the growth of fibroblast cells. Collagen makes up 75% of our skin. As we age, the breakdown of collagen and exposure of skin to damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun leads to the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin. Glutamine helps to reverse these effects of aging by significantly increasing collagen production within the skin. As an immune booster, glutamine is also efficient in the production of antioxidant compounds which helps to neutralize harmful toxins and free radicals.
L Glutamine Benefits for Women:
Without the high levels of testosterone in our bodies like men have, it can be a greater challenge for women to build and maintain lean muscle. The benefit to not having the high testosterone levels is that women don’t het “big and bulky” like men can when they lift weights or do resistance training. Testosterone can make the muscles swell, but it also helps men to hold on to their muscle during weeks of inactivity. In my experience, to maintain a high level of fitness, feel the best and maintain lean muscle, women need to be more consistent with their training and supplements than many men do. L Glutamine supplementation is one of the easy things we van do on a daily basis along with our protein supplementation. Read the labels on your protein supplements and you may find there is L Glutamine added to the protein!
