Instructions & Use
Your new Himalayan salt platter can be used as a tasteful and delicious way to prepare and serve your favorite foods. Before you get started, though, it’s important to take the correct steps to temper or prepare your platter for use with hot dishes.
Use with Cold Foods
Using your Himalayan salt platter to serve or prepare cold foods is a much simpler process. There is no need for heat tempering here. Simply place the Himalayan salt platter in the freezer for roughly an hour before serving your fruits, vegetables, salads, chocolates or desserts.
While a Himalayan salt platter adds a special touch to any dessert, it particularly complements foods with a tangy zest to them. Try using it as a serving platter for margarita ice cream! Use with Hot Foods
When using your salt platter to cook hot foods, take care to increase the temperature of your oven, grill or barbeque step by step, just as you did in the tempering process. Take note, though, that now only 5 minutes of wait time are required between each temperature level.
Once your salt platter has reached the desired temperature, you can place your food directly on the tile, which will simultaneously season, cook and sear your food.
Grilling or searing meat on your salt block can add a delicious flavor, but it works well with vegetable dishes too!
If using a glass-topped or electric stove, it’s important to use a secondary item, such as a pie tin or wok ring to place under the salt platter and ensure it’s at least ½ inch off of the heating element. When using a barbeque, heat regulation will be trickier, so take care to bring the heat of the platter up slowly. Finally, when cooking over a gas flame on a stove, begin by heating the salt platter on low heat for fifteen minutes and then moving to medium heat. Once you’ve made the switch to medium heat, you should be ready to begin cooking.
Tempering your salt platter before its first heated use is important to ensure safety and lasting quality of the product. Luckily, tempering is a very simple process. Before you use the platter for any cooking or grilling, complete the following steps:
- Place the salt platter on the bottom rack of your oven and set the oven to its lowest heat setting (this will typically be somewhere between 130-170 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Once the oven has reached its lowest heat setting, allow the salt platter to remain at this temperature for approximately 30 minutes.
- Begin increasing the temperature of the oven by roughly 50 degrees at a time. Once the oven has heated to each new setting, allow the salt platter to sit at that temperature for approximately 30 minutes.
- Once the temperature of your oven has reached 550 degrees, shut the oven off and leave the door closed. Allow the oven to cool down to room temperature over time, and then remove the salt platter, which is now ready for use.
Please note that it’s normal for the salt platter to develop cracks or make popping and cracking noises while tempering.
Care & Cleaning Instructions
After using your salt platter for cooking, you can use the edge of a knife or a fine brush to scrape off any residual oils, fats or grease. Then rinse the platter in warm water without soap, and leave it in a warm, dry place for at least 24 hours.
If you’ve been using the salt platter either to serve fruits and vegetables or as a cutting board, simply wipe it clean with a moist towel and then allow it to dry for 24 hours. No soap is necessary.
Over time, the surface of your salt platter may begin to show wear, divots or unevenness from use. In the event that this occurs, you can use a fine sandpaper to smooth the platter by removing its top layer.
